Gestures (white), 2016 is a key work in the artist’s long-running investigation of the body as a container. Referencing human chromosome pairs, the work consists of 38 pairs of undulated forms, each fabricated in white perforated polyester to the artist’s standing scale, articulating posture as a spatial measure. Commissioned for the 4th floor of the 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, KY, one pair is centered over each bed. This installation aligns the sculpture’s human scale with the intimacy of shared sleep and the rumpled sheets below. Constructed from pliable materials, the white forms hold their initial shape—a “gesture”—but are designed to gradually shift and transform into more organic forms in response to gravity and environmental elements, serving as a metaphor for the self’s temporary boundary and the processes of change over time.
