Crush
“Crush” is a singular, three-dimensional form that reimagines the sterile format of a genetic microscopy gel slide, scaled to a monumental, shimmering presence. A flesh-toned poly-spandex sleeve envelopes a pink-painted wooden frame, layered beneath a translucent liquid vinyl skin. Hand-sewn with red cotton sutures, a central vertical seam bisects the work, creating a tension between clinical precision and visceral materiality. The warmth of the interior pink tones radiates through the liquid vinyl, while the oversized sleeves crumple into soft, skin-like folds as they meet the floor.
Defying its own physics, “Crush” stands six feet tall with a depth of only a few inches. This free-standing posture is achieved through a deliberate architectural integration: the piece’s lower “legs” disappear into square apertures in the floor, where they are secured out of sight. This structural sleight-of-hand allows the work to exist as a precarious, upright body in space, balancing vulnerability with a quiet, grounded strength.
