Installation of plaster and painted handmade paper
Genes_is (1992) premiered as an installation at Zephyr Gallery, Louisville, KY, presenting the first body of work by Radtke directly engaging with the emerging field of genetic mapping. The installation, consisting of six handmade paper paintings and three pairs of plaster human torsos, was created in direct dialogue with the nascent Human Genome Mapping Project (begun 1990). The work foregrounds chromosome pairs—the foundational carriers of heredity and variation—translating complex biological data into visual and tangible forms and raising questions about how this new information will impact our health and the health of our off-spring.
