Molt
As a commentary on transformation and the body’s shifting boundaries, “Molt” (2006) presents a vertically-oriented, suspended form constructed from pale liquid vinyl sheeting. The sculpture, measuring 72” x 9” x 9”, directly invokes a discarded biological membrane, akin to an outer skin that has been shed. The artist’s hand is evidenced in the meticulous application of cotton thread sutures used to close the length of the vinyl tube, creating a visual tension between the industrial material and the organic, surgical quality of the stitching. Attached by a single stainless steel pin, the empty form responds to minute air currents, subtly wafting to assert a transient, breath-like presence in the exhibition space.
