The Self Series (2006-2013) establishes a conceptual framework that re-examines the body not as a static subject, but as a mutable, measured condition of space. The wooden box sculptures, Self 1, 2, 3, and 4, are created as physical surrogates, assembled in pairs that reference the structure of chromosome pairs. Each box is precisely calibrated to the artist’s own dimensions—height, width, and depth—functioning as an abstract yet intensely personal portrait.

Crafted from locally sourced wood chosen for its skin-like tones, the pieces introduce a duality: the organic, vulnerable body contained by rigid, reductive geometry. Notable dark spalting scars mark the wood, symbolizing the tree’s natural defense mechanisms—a metaphor for the body’s self-protection and healed wounds. The installation transforms from solid mass to immaterial experience: when the viewer peers into the mirror-lined interior, their reflection is either partially isolated or infinitely multiplied, creating an effect that powerfully emphasizes presence without mass. These layered vessels are non-gendered, empty, and interactive, prompting a contemplation of personal space, vulnerability, and the ephemeral nature of the self.
